In 1922 Kate Smailes of Goathland planted 12 English oak trees to commemorate the 12 men of the village who lost their lives in WWI. Kates own son, George, was one of those lost. The trees were planted in a prominent position visible from the disused railway line so that every day on her walk into the village she would see the oaks and remember her lost son with a living tribute to the men for the whole village to share.
